Ice cliffs by Marijke Gilchrist

Ice cliffs  2007

Acrylics

59x69cm

Vertical cliff faces are made entirely from ice.  The truncated end of a glacier feeds the ice into the ocean like a colossal conveyor belt. The ice eventually explodes into the water.  This phenomenon is known as ‘calving’ because the iceberg drops down suddenly into the sea like a newborn calf.
